Modern Ireland at it's most shocking
I realise that I may well be shooting myself in the foot here, and I should probably shut the hell up. but the big news story of the week here in Ireland has disgusted me. Yes I write erotica, and BDSM and kinly stuff, but it's fantasy and not destroying anyone's life.
A 17 year old girl / young woman was videoed, allegedly performing sexual acts on a man by camera phones and uploaded to "social networking" sites such as you tube, facebook etc. and is distraught about the consequences.
Where the hell are our manners gone? Yeah, maybe she should have had more sense but it seems the drink was in and the sense was out and for people to "share" these images that weren't theirs to share in the first place shocks me to the core.
How many of us are so perfect that we don't have our cringe moments? OK for most of us, those cringe moments might be less momentous but this young girls life is ruined by people posting intimate stuff that was none of their business all across the world wide web. Shame on you. Do what you like with yourselves and your own videos but to take footage that was non-consensual and send it viral is a shame upon our nation.
To all those who videoed I want to say: While you were photographing did any one of you look at that girl and think, "crap, she has no idea she's on camera, maybe I should tell her?" It could have been your daughter, sister, niece or best friend. But you did nothing to help her. For shame.

Wow, without even knowing the full story, I feel sorry for this young girl. You are absolutely right - people should not publish anything about someone else without their knowledge or consent - where is their decency or compassion? Just shows they are low lives, worse than the paparazzi. Poor girl. Too bad there are no consequences for them. But hopefully some good will come out of things like this, somehow.
ReplyDeleteI do hope you're right Cali... Perhaps a change in privacy laws or something may be the outcome, technically she is a minor so I'm pretty sure filming her and broadcasting it must be illegal. She was at a concert and must have been out of it either with alcohol or drugs and was allegedly performing a sex act in public. I'm not arguing that she was right to do so, but my bet is that knowing what she did would have been enough to haunt her for years without the added shame of it being paster all over re social media. Anyone with any compassion in their soul would have tried to help her, not video it to send it all across the world . Seriously I hope there are prosecutions out of it... I understand from the papers that it is being investigated by the gardai (police)
DeleteThat's crappy Tara - WTF is wrong with people who think this is ok to do? They must not even realize the consequences to the girl. I think as we get older, we can say fuck off to the bastards and brush it off but at 17 - poor girl.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more Natasha - young people are so much more vulnerable and less equipped for the crap life throws at them. Such a public humiliation would be devastating for anyone but for a teenager it would be hell on earth. She's going to have to find a way to rise above it, which won't be easy at her age.
DeleteThis is the ugly downside of the internet. It's too easy to take advantage of people.
ReplyDeleteYou're absolutely right Cara, it is too easy and also it can be done anonymously
DeleteThis is an awful thing. It's just such a scary world out there with all this technology. Who hasn't done things they regret? It's awful that one mistake would lead to such a public embarrassment. My heart goes out to her.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it dreadful?
DeleteThe sad thing is its not that long since people here used to look out for one another - now they don't care. If this is the price of progress it's too expensive for me.
